I will start off with some ‘common sense’ information like your drivers license. Of course if you are not a German citizen your drivers license probably does not authorize you to drive in Germany. You will need to contact your local license branch (BMV) and find out the steps you need to take to receive an international drivers license. I have not personally done this because I have a European military drivers license but from what I have heard it is not too hard to do or terribly costly.

Next of course is having a car to drive when you arrive in Germany. This is pretty obvious. Coordinate with any INTERNATIONAL car rental service and they can have a car ready and waiting for you at your arrival city. Another option is to rent the car in Germany, which is a pretty easy process as well. Most service representatives speak English and will be happy to help you out.

Now you will need to know the ‘meat and potatoes’ of driving in Germany, the traffic laws. If you are an American, or have driven in the U.S., you will find that driving in Germany is not much different. Without telling you every single travel law written in Germany, I will try to shed some light on some of the major differences:

Finland is not a country which may necessarily first come to mind when you are planning to take a holiday or vacation abroad. Finland though is a thoroughly fun and interesting country to visit and below we look at some reasons why and some facts about Finland.

1. Finland invented the Sauna and it is said that over 60 per cent of people have a sauna in their home. Finns take great pleasure in their invention of the sauna and sauna is something taken seriously as a pastime.

2. Finland also seems to produce a very high percentage of racing drivers. Many top rally drivers are often Finns and Formula 1 has also produced a number of well-known Finnish drivers. In recent years, Salo, Raikkonen and Kovalainen are just a few names.

3. In summer time for a few weeks, it barely gets dark. In the peak of summer you can literally read a newspaper at 3am as the skies trun only faintly dark.

4. Lapland is in the far Northern part of Finland and Lapland is well-known for Father Christmas. In this part of Finland it also stays very dark for several months in the winter time. It stays dark almost twenty four hours a day and sun worhsippers would find it a hard and tough lace to live.

Just like other Western countries, one of the customs in Iceland is to shake hands when greeting while saying ‘hello’. A kiss on the cheek is acceptable, too, along with the greeting ‘Sael’ or ‘Saell’, an expression which means ‘happiness’.

Another of the Iceland customs is to remove your shoes in the hallway upon entering someone’s home. It is also common for Icelanders to invite guests to their home, so don’t get surprised in case someone invites you. Just be sure to bring a bouquet of flowers or any other gift when you go.

When at table, you don’t have to say grace before meals. You don’t need to express gratitude, either, like the French or the Japanese (by saying expressions like ‘Bon Appetit’ or ‘Itadakimasu’). Instead, eat heartily then thank your host after the meal by shaking his hand.
