Greek Italy - Una Fazza Una Razza

Much of Southern Italy was colonised by Greeks 2500 years ago, and these areas form what we still know today as Magna Grecia (Greater Greece). As a result, Southern Italy became a centre of Greek culture, music, and language for hundreds of years. Greece has in the past also been occupied by Romans and Italians. To this day, we can see the Greek influence in Italy, and Italian influence in Greece, through architecture, music, food and language. Naples, for example, was a city founded by the Greeks, and it’s name derives from the Greek Nea Polis (New City). Naples was also a Greek speaking town until the 9th century BC. It is an ancient Greek city, with a ’secret abandoned’ underground city, where there are many original city walls, and even a Greek-Roman theatre where the famous Emperor Nero used to perform opera! The underground city can be visited on guided tours organised by Napoli Sottoteranea -’Napoli Underground’. In Piazza Bellini in the centre, you can also see some Greek ruins of the original city.Agrigento, Sicily, is famous for Valle dei Templi (Valley of Temples), one of the most important archelogical sites in the world, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

There are many Doric Greek temples just outside the main centre of Agrigento, including Temple of Hercules, Temple of Zeus and Temple of Concord. The Sicilian town of Siracusa was also an ancient Greek town. The Greeks arrived here in 734BC and named the small Island of Ortigia in Siracusa after ‘ortgyia’, the Greek word for ‘quail’, as it was ‘quail shaped’. (how did they know what it looked like from above…?) They also built various temples, such as the Temple of Apollo in the central Piazza Pancali, and the Temple of Athena. They also built the Arethusa fountain, named after the legendary nymph of Arethusa, which is now a ‘hangout’ for local youngsters. Also, inland from the main Siracusa centre, they built the biggest theatre in Sicily.

The River Seine In Paris France

The river Seine is probably one of the most well known rivers in France and has been made even more popular as a tourist attraction within the city of Paris.

Dating back to when the Parisii tribe first established fishing villages along its banks, the waters of the River Seine have always been the heart and soul of Paris and although this river is not used much today as a commercial waterway, it is used extensively for cruising.

Yet ocean going vessels can still get down the river Seine from The Havre down to Rouen, which is about 120km, although river boats which cruise up and down the Seine can navigate approximately 560km and the river extends right through to Dijon in the Alps. But because the river is slow flowing it makes it easy to navigate and a very pleasant trip for those on a cruise.

When Paris prospered through its river trading back in the days of the Romans, canals were put in place to link other major rivers such as the River Loire and the River Rhine. Then in the eighteen hundreds locks were installed to make life a lot easier as the water levels varied quite dramatically, especially around the Paris area, which are now very tightly controlled today.

Enchanting Switzerland

Just arrived home from Switzerland and I am already missing it. Switzerland with all its scenic beauty, cow bells and marvelous and ever-ready to help people. One of my husbands’ friend had already been to Switzerland and he provided us with a tour plan for four days. We had four days and there was so much to do and see. We tried to squeeze in everything that we could. Instead of staying at a hotel in Inerlaken (it was suggested by our friend and all the Indian crowd invariably land there). Interlaken is in the center of Switzerland, so it can be made base for the tour, but my husband had already talked to his friend in Lausanne and we stayed there for our trip. Lausanne is the Olympic Capital” since 1994. It is home to the Olympic Museum, the most visited site in Switzerland. Bjart Ballet of Lausanne is world-famous.

From what I have seen of Switzerland, I can say that every inch of this country is beautiful, not only the landscapes but people too. It is also worth mentioning that the Swiss people don’t talk in English but that won’t be a problem if you want some help. They always try to help strangers. I got a rude shock and back to reality message on board the N2 bus from London Victoria station. A drunkard started using abusive language with a lady with a child, saying she wasn’t a good mother. The baby started crying. The lady asked the driver to throw the man off the bus but got no reaction, ultimately she herself had to get down earlier. Then the guy turned his attention at Ananya, who was blissfully sleeping through all the clamor, but thankfully nothing untoward happened.

Hiking in Wales - A Quick Guide to Snowdon

At 3560 feet or 1085 metres Yr Wyddfa - better known as Snowdon - is the highest mountain in Wales and one of the most popular hikes in Snowdonia. Many people simply take the mountain railway to the summit and some of those walk down but the hike to the summit is definitely more rewarding than the use of steam power! I have listed a choice of the best walking routes here.

The path from Llanberis is the easiest, there being a wide track all the way and no overly steep or rough ground. The way is long though - 5 miles each way - and will always be busy in holiday periods. This route roughly follows the railway track up the western side of the mountain and you will encounter a large number of people walking down who have caught the train to the summit. You would be justified in a certain amount of smugness as you pass them! Good luck to them though - the train is a great ride.
