Denmark - 10 Tips to Getting Started in Denmark

Getting started in Denmark as a relocated expat can be frustrating and overwhelming. There are steps that must be taken in order to “get all your ducks in order” and not doing some things especially in the time constraints required will cause you lots of aggravation and time redoing them the right way.

But it does not have to be a problem, if you follow these 10 steps and get a good start to your new life in Denmark.

Get permission to move to Denmark. If you do not have the right documents such as residency and work permits life will be on hold when you arrive. When you get your permits, go to the Folkeregister in your kommune and get your CPR number. Without a CPR number your life in Denmark will be on hold Open a bank account and apply for a Dankort (the national currency of Denmark). Okay it is a bank debit card, but it is more popular than cash! Next, stop at the tax office and apply for a tax card. You cannot get paid without a tax card. Now visit your kommune and register for Danish language classes, which are free to all new residents. If you have a driver’s license from outside the EU, get to switched to a Danish license within 14 days. It is illegal to drive on a foreign license for more than 14 days after registering. Register you children in school, kindergarten or nursery. The kommune will assist you, but there are usually waiting lists, so apply immediately. If you plan to work and live in Denmark for more than a year, it is worth getting unemployment insurance or A-Kasse. Denmark is a very safe country, but it is worth getting homeowners insurance, which will include your bicycle. (the number one thing stole in Denmark) Finally, familiarize yourself with the area you are living in. The more you learn about your home the quicker you will feel at home.
