Get the right stuff…
What you take with you on holiday can make or break y our trip away, especially if you are traveling to a third world destination. I have spent some time in the third world, Morocco and Nepal specifically, and I’ve found that if something breaks, you can’t get it fixed easily or even replaced.. so you really do need to think ahead and make sure that you have gear that is going to last the journey. This includes all the items that I guess I’d consider “hardware”, like watches, knives etc.
I came across a great site called “Your Defense Gear” which stocks items you might expect to find available in the Military. Great stuff, well tested and well priced. Not the cheapest you might find in some discout store.. BUT when you are depending on your equiptment, you really need to know you can count on it to do it’s job.
Some of the items that caught my eye include hatch gloves. I really wish I’d had a pair of these when I was crossing Thurong La pass in Nepal! Great looking gloves for specific uses. Some great for cold conditions, some for touring like motorcycle gloves (love to take a trip along the Amalfi Coast one day.) All types, you name it!
Next thing I can’t recommend highly enough is the leatherman tools. You DO have one of these, don’t you?? Seriously, no traveler should be without one of these. They are standard travel gear. I had a knock-off which bit the dust ont he way to the Atlas mountains. Not good.. since then I have a genuine one and the difference is astounding. Get the real thing, folks! They are worth every cent! If you are trying to travel light, and don’t think you need all of the gizmos, leatherman knives are fantastic as well.
I really love this site and it has pretty much everything you need right there. (Which is great if you leave sorting out your gear to the last minute.. just jump on the site, make 1 order, and you’re done! No need to travel all about town getting your stuff together.) Just a couple more quick product recommendations.. such as the wonderful Luminox Watches which you shouldn’t travel without. Emergency kits, sleeping bags, Spyderco knives (including the new spyderco S, which replaced the manically popular Q model as their cutway blade model) and basically everything you could need for a trip all in the one place.
So you yourself over to the site if you find yourself in a hurry to get your gear before you leave!

I travelled to India twice, in 1995 and in 1997, and can tell that some things are utterly needed when you do not extect it, like metal locks that prevent your belongings from stealing in trains.
I live in Kiev, Ukraine, and here you can fix practically anything… if you know the places ))).
Best luck.
Alex.

I have a tip which is proven useful, keep your travel gear semi packed, check it out when you get back, clean, wash, etc. pack most of it back, if possible all of the general things you normally use.
If you are a spontaneous traveler like I am, packing gear at the last moment can be fatal. Be prepared to go out any time.
